The name Mithu, in Bengali means ‘Sweetness’ and , that’s exactly what u are, Sis !
You embraced me in the family, when I first came in after marrying your brother,……  more than forty years ago, with open arms,  a broad smile and  an assuring touch, making me feel completely at home … I love you for that, Mithu.
Yes, with all the sweetness, you brought so much of joy and laughter in the family. ….No wonder, that you have always been the ‘darling ‘of your parents,  and  the bright ‘sunshine ‘ for the rest of us ! (Not forgetting that  now,  you are the queen in the heart of your dear Hubby, Ram)

Wishing you the very best, on your special Birthday, Mithu, Be Happy and Healthy, and continue to be a source of joy to all,

Lots and lots of love,

Dearest Mithu,
It is with the greatest joy that we are extending our very best wishes to you on a momentous day in your life, viz your 60th birthday.

Howie remembers vividly the day you came into this world on 27 Apr 1956 in the little town of Kangar - Ma's agony with her labour pain, the midwife's home visit and then the arrival of the cutest little baby with distinct dimples on both cheeks. He was in the Penang hostel at that time and as he had to go back there soon, he held you, stood in a corner & cried.

Then as you grew up, you were a naughty little child.Who can forget you rubbing yourself with chilli powder in 1958 in Penang, then screaming, as well as mixing large amounts of dhal with rice which meant we had to eat khichuri for the next 10 days. Then in Kolkata in 1961, you, together with Raja, bathed the thakur statues in the toilet bowl!!And what about your words such as "whool" (which meant "fool")?

And No 2's remembrance of you since 1973 - a straightforward person who called a spade a spade but who had a  very soft heart, and someone who took to No 2 from the outset.

Alas, all are memories but written indelibly in our minds.

Our greatest wish is for you to be happy always, and continue to show your dimpled smile .

With warmest love.
 Howie & No 2.

‘You keep your past by having sisters. As you get older, they’re the only ones who don’t get bored if you talk about your memories’ - DeborahMoggach

Mithu,
As you celebrate the your Big Six, I hope you won’t get bored if I took a walk down memory lane and shared a few reflections………

-        On 27 April 1956, a baby sister arrived  to light up our lives in the northern Malaysian town of Kangar, Perlis where Baba was the only doctor in the hospital.

-        The little girl had big eyes, dimples on both cheeks and as she grew up, she often wore a china doll fringe on her forehead.
-        She became a very dushtu (naughty) little thing.

-        One day she decided that the chilli powder that Ma had bought for cooking curries would make a nice moisturizer and rubbed herself all over with it……Ouch!!

-        On another occasion, the same dushtu, in secret collaboration with her Kolkata cousins decided to give the Thakurs (deities) from the puja altar a bath.  And where should the dear Gods bathe? In the toilet bowl, of course!.....Eeeeks!!

-        The privileged one, being the youngest in the family was the only one among the siblings to enjoy real birthday parties with new dresses lovingly tailored by Ma who also baked yummy birthday cakes with beautiful icing for all the guests. How we enjoyed those birthday parties with lots of food, fun and games.
-        Despite our six year age difference, Ma used to painstakingly sew identical frocks for us which we proudly wore on our various outings.

-        I recall those long distance drives from one Malaysian town to another in Baba’s Holden station wagon. ( Yes Holden, an Ozzie car!) As both of us were prone to travel sickness, the back seat would be reclined so that we could stretch out horizontally and have good sleep during the journey.  That kept the travel sickness at bay.

-        When Baba and Ma went on a six month world tour, we were left in the care of Chotokakima and Howie the Great who had a scooter.  Our parents came back with lots of gifts for us…….. I remember a talking doll which could utter eleven sentences including ‘I am Little Poppet’ when you pulled a string attached to her back.  She was a lovely blonde from London. And from the Big Apple came the three feet tall beauty dressed in a bridal outfit….. can’t remember her name now.

-         Our beloved terrier Brownie often enjoyed a treat from the little dushtu. When she did not want to eat the egg during breakfast, she quietly offered it to the pooch when Ma was not looking. How Brownie loved those treats!

-        I can’t for the life of me recall why we gave ourselves funny names like Howie, Khedi and Putti……. only the name Howie remains to this day.

-        All too soon, the little girl became a teenager and decided to leave her Southeast Asian home to pursue her studies Down Under.  There, she not only got her university degree, but graduated to attain the status of MRS.

-        As the man of her dreams was a Sydney resident from India, off we went to witness a Telugu wedding in Chennai complete with yellow saris, ornate jewelry and lots of jasmine flowers on the hair.

-        Her wifely duties included learning  South Indian cooking  and she  does it so well that I am not exaggerating when I say that she makes the best sambar, rasam and dosas in the world……… yum, yum!

-        As an adult our little dushtu had an eye for  the good things in life…….. while the rest of the siblings are  chin-chai pochai ( not particular) about what we buy, she will get only the quality stuff  ranging from ceramics, to paintings to wall  hangings and handbags………..

I could ramble on and on, but must wind up here……. Mithu, I wish you a fabulous 60th birthday and many, many  happy years ahead! I will leave you with a poem by Christina Rossetti who once wrote:

For there is no friend like a sister
In calm or stormy weather
To cheer one on the tedious way
To fetch one if one goes astray
To lift one if one totters down
To strengthen whilst one stands!
Cheers!
Didi

Dear Mithu Aunty,

You’ve supported me whether you lived far or near
To my wonderful aunt who has always been so dear
Happy 60th birthday and may there be many more
I’m wishing you all the best life has in store

(Ok I stole of that from Google but it was most apt and I do mean it !!!!!!)

Here are the top ten things I love about you:
1)   Firstly and most importantly You really do care and have been there for me through good times and bad and for the love and affection you show me when I come home to Telopea and making the “green room” so welcoming!

Our love for:
2)   The Royals, yes Kate Middleton we love what you wore in India!

3)    Shopping although I do sense that you think I am rather conservative in my style!

4)  Girlie magazines yup hate to admit it, we can name all the Kardashians…. Dare I admit it in public?!

Who else can I talk to about who’s hot and who’s not?! Yes the Hemsworth brothers are definitely hot!

5)   Girlie Movies, well movies in general

 And…..
6)  For your yummy cooking
7)   Your superior knowledge of music, you are more down with the kids than I am (not hard when I keep listening to stuff like Westlife!)
8)   For liking all the pictures on my Facebook mostly about Mia!

9)  Good gossiping and putting the world to rights over a glass of wine
10)                  And finally for forgiving me for scaring Anand when he was over in the UK when he was 7! Yes, that was a big hurdle in our relationship Lol

Anyway, Aunty, many, many happy returns of the day. Hope you have an absolutely fabulous day. I know Mama will spoil you rotten so don’t even need to say. So looking forward to spending your special day with you.
Lots of Love

What a gorgeous, glamorous mother of the groom!

Very honoured to share in one of the happiest days of your life.
Who would have thought this posh looking lady would teach me one of my most useful life skills (swearing) when she was my boss ;). Can't believe that was 28 years ago.

To my dear friend Arun Happy 60th!
May you continue to feel the joy of this day always

Aunty,
Your energy levels are truly inspirational, your outlook towards life is truly motivational. You are someone whom we truly admire, to become just like you when we grow old is our only desire cause turning sixty may be the beginning of the sunset period of your life but then sunsets are some of the most beautiful spectacles – all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the view and moreover you are not turning 60, you are just turning 20 for the third time or you are just a 20 year old with 40 years of experience.
Love, Shriya, Suma, Rohin

Regards,

Rohin

Dear Mithu Auntie
 Happy 60th!!!
Thank you for being the caring, bubbly person that you are! Truly appreciate the frank chats and advice over the years.
Was great to see you all smiles at cafe d'or yesterday...loved the speech too.
Hope you enjoy the gift. It comes with unlimited tech support included from us, if desired :)
Lots of love

ps. Liz still hasn't learnt how to make your famous sambar and rasam, this situation needs to be remedied. Also cheese bondas. We agree with (Uncle) Mama, cheese bondas are yum.
